| WHAT IS A VISA |
A passport stamp or document that authorizes the passport-holder to enter a country for specific purposes for a particular time period If you're a citizen of India, in most cases you'll need a visa to enter any country other than Nepal. |
A visa doesn't permit entry into a specific country, however. A visa simply indicates that your application has been reviewed by a consular officer at an embassy or consulate, and that the officer has determined you're eligible to enter the country for a specific purpose. |
A visa allows you to travel to a specific country as far as the port of entry (airport or land border crossing) and ask the immigration officer to allow you to enter the country. Only the immigration officer has the authority to permit you to enter their country. He or she decides how long you can stay for any particular visit. |
|
If you have a valid visa, you will not normally be refused entry on arrival unless your circumstances have changed, you gave false information, or you did not tell the entry clearance officer important facts when you applied for your visa. |
| The visa tells the immigration officer at a foreign port of arrival: |
 |
the purpose of your travel; |
 |
how long you can stay; and |
 |
the latest date that you can enter their country. |
Normally, you may enter and leave the country on which you hold a valid visa as many times as you like during the validity of your visa. |
There are two categories of visas: immigrant and nonimmigrant. |
Immigrant visas are for people who intend to live permanently in that country. |
Nonimmigrant visas are for people with permanent residence outside the country. but who wish to be in the on a temporary basis - for tourism, medical treatment, business, temporary work or study. |
